What are the 5 components of fitness?

  1. Resistance Training - sometimes referred to as strength training.  Resistance training helps you to burn more calories all day long, known as the “afterburn” effect. This can last up to 48-72 hours after your workout, where as cardio only lasts 2-3 hours.  Resistance training also helps build muscle, which burns more calories to sustain than fat. So the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn on a regular basis (known as increasing your metabolism).
  2. Cardio - full term is cardiovascular exercises. These are exercises that increase your heart rate and typically build endurance. Using cardio, you will maximize weight loss results with minimum effort. However, without resistance training, you will like gain back weight as soon as you reduce your cardio time by any amount. I can help you design a progressive cardio program to maximize your caloric burn without overexerting.
  3. Stretching - helps minimize the chances of injury, also known as a form of injury prevention. If we exercise and strengthen our muscles, we are tightening them. Inversely we need to spend time stretching them post-workout or else a move that we have done a million times might suddenly be out of our range of motion causing a pulled muscle or some other injury.  Stretching is also important for individuals who don’t or can’t exercise. Without movement, our muscles get shorter (the sarcomere that make up your muscles actually move when not used and make the muscle fibers shorter). Therefore, stretching is very important after sitting all day at work, traveling, etc.
  4. Nutrition - accounts for 50-60% of your weight loss or muscle building results. I can help determine your caloric and macronutrient needs based on a comprehensive individualized assessment.
