Heart Awareness

So, you know that small organ that’s pumping in your chest? It’s a pretty important organ, kind of a big deal. This is your chance to start thinking about that little, hard-working ball of muscle. It only provides oxygen to every cell in your body. Besides breathing, it’s the main reason we are alive. Why don’t we think about it and appreciate it everyday? One answer is probably because we can’t see it; when it starts looking damaged, we don’t notice. Even when it starts feeling damaged, we don’t always notice.

Maybe that’s why there is a whole month set aside for heart awareness. February is American Heart Month (think Valentine’s Day). A month set aside for us to appreciate our heart and maybe learn more about how to keep it healthy and/or know when it is in trouble. According to Food & Nutrition magazine, “American Heart Month is a time to battle cardiovascular disease and educate Americans on what we can do to live heart-healthy lives. Heart disease, including stroke, is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. These diseases, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers, claim more than 865,000 American lives a year.”

Instead of repeating myself, I’ll direct you to last year’s post Happy February and Heart Health Month! It covers cardiovascular disease risk factors, prevention methods and signs & symptoms of a heart attack. These are so important to understand. Even if you’ve heard it before, review the signs & symptoms… you might learn something new that could save you or a loved one.

Here is your challenge: For the rest of February, think about your heart everyday. It can be anything from placing your hand on your heart to appreciate it continually beating, or adding in an extra day of cardiovascular exercise to strengthen the heart, or checking out the American Heart Association informational website. There’s only 8 more days of February, so set a reminder for yourself to think about your heart everyday. Cut a heart-shaped piece of paper for you bathroom mirror or refrigerator as a reminder.

Love your heart so it will love you back! <3

Healthy, happy living!
